Friday FarmGirls at Heart~Nothing Like the Present and Crochet Is So...

FFG.WinterFarm2

Addicting? LOL!  Seriously, I love this art form~have for a very long time...but I'm a 'dumb' crafter b/c I don't read the patterns all that well, and I'm impatient.  AND NO~SisterT is NOT going to pray for any patience...she couldn't STAND the results of an answered prayer~the 'process' of developing it~ LOL!! But since I am totally impatient, I love the 1/2 double crochet for a lot of things.  Recently I finished up my son's blanket I began a year ago~it's 100% cotton yarn from Peaches & Cream and is chocolate brown-baby blue-cream patterned with a choco brown edge~

I got into making something quick and pretty easy too this holiday season and just couldn't quit~LOL...POTHOLDERS! NO kidding~ I made some with granny squares and then with 1/2 double or single crochets as well~included were some dish towels to match...These are really servicable and make the kitchen so ole timey and comfy!  At first, I put thin ready made potholders in between the two layers of work and then put an edge to hold it all in place~then I figured out that even though I was using thin ones, the premade ones are too thick, so I recycled some old blanket cotton flannel and doubled the thickness to make the 'just right.'

I also made a purse that you can see~it's lined and has a button closure~my hippie bag!

I am hankering~REALLY dying to get my hands on some sage green cotton yarn that is a 14oz cone from Sugar and Cream sold here locally to make a throw for my den~AND then there is this multi-colored one: purple, sage green and cream...oh oh oh! I can get excited! BUT WHERE would I use it??? I dunno, but I'd be IN LOVE for sure!

Okay, the first three pics shows how they're put together and that stuff I used. Some of the pics are backs and fronts~in that order...

Here's the back of the one above~

Friday Farmgirls at Heart~Junktiques and More!

Plans4You

Stuff is driving me crazy...in fact, I am trying to pair down some because it has taken me over since our move into our current home.  Downsizing is all good~but how in the world did I miss going through and weeding out before we left the other house? It happened; it really did! AND today I am in a pickle trying to decide over a few things...

I love OLD STUFF~I am not all that thrilled with reproductions, but adore the real stuff, even with its imperfections.  I like the patina of old and used..there's a story to tell~a well worn idea or even that went along with the people of the past...
This love of the old warms my farmgirl heart as many of these items would have been used and were used in the homes of my grandparents on my father's side.  I don't have many things that were theirs, but the ones I have I love! The old jugs was my grandmothers.  I also have her treadle sewing cabinet.  My father has the old sewing machine~and it still works!

The old cabinet is a 1920s buffet that was "rescued"  from the trash of our neighbor in KY...shhhh...LOL!  Well you see, they were remodeling the old two story house and were hauling out all kinds of stuff~and this little baby was in pieces lying on the ground...I also got some lovely chandelier pieces of antique lighting~oh yeah~ which I have used in our previous historic home and this old house...but about the buffet~hub rebuilt it and for a few years it sat in the entry way in our 1880 home in KY near the back door TO HOLD SHOES lol!! Today, it houses kitchen items! I purchased some wire shelving for the drawer areas, and the bottom drawer holds kitchen linnens!

The settee is a find! I had some young teenage married folk next door to me in the first home I ever owned which was in 1984 who were moving! They HATED the piece and sold it to me...for a little itty bitty song~now truth be told, I didn't know anything about it either...and the upholstery was awful...but for years it sat unused and covered in my bedroom and then in my daughter's bedroom until I had it recovered seven years ago~I STILL love it!  It's my favorite piece!

I left this picture as is so you can see some other things that while in flux of our move, they are quite old and a fave of mine.  The pedestal on the settee was also my grandmother's, and I've had that in my life since I was a small child.  It's a plant stand!  When I was a little girl, I used to take my foot when I would lie in my doll crib~oh yeah,,,I was that little once..and twirrl it...until I flipped it and broke out the window~I DON'T do that anymore~lol!! But today it graces that same window you see with a silk (right now) flower, soon to be potted plant (brought in from the cold that's coming...).  I have repainted it~it's always been black.

You can also see the piano stool...we own the piano too, that belonged to hub's grandmother.  It's more valuable than the piano, so I'm told, but I like the claw/ball feet on it.  Now this stool is quite heavy and my daughter when she was about four was sitting on it spinning.  I told her to stop...and she flipped it (SOUND familiar??) and busted her great toe~oh this was REALLY bad...LIKE her mama, she's learned NOT to spin...

I want to tell you about these pendant lights my hub made for over our kitchen sink.  The globes are antiques from our home in KY...they  were on the lights in the upstairs that were solid copper. I didn't take the copper part as I believed the house should be as original as possible, but as a memento of the home we loved, hub recreated these for me...A wonderful friend did the rooster in my colors~I love it!

This isn't a brag session, but more of an exercise for me to focus on the good things in our home...we are still remodeling and since there is a fruit basket turnover of rooms these next few weeks, things are looking pretty rough... NO pics, pleeeze! LOL!! I promise once things ever get settled down around here (soon, I hope) to take pics and show ya our progress! DEFINITELY before Christmas!! ;-)) (AND I'm weeding out too~oh yeah!)

It's my farmgirl heart to enjoy old and sometimes FOUND stuff~repurposed and sometimes left as is or redone...

Friday Farmgirls at Heart~Living the Dream!

Plans4You
Amber waves of grain...
Autumn...Fall...Harvest.  This is my favorite time of year when all the world is washed in the golden-orange-browns and greens of the season! I really can't decide if it's my ALL TIME fave or if like spring I am just so glad for the beauty and changes that it's so welcomed in my soul...but I do enjoy riding the roads looking at the scenery, picking up leaves, nuts and branches~and I love pumpkins.  I remember in college, a small christian Bible school nestled in the busy metropolis where we attended church in the countryside riding through to see my favorite house~a yellow, lapboard with a country porch...autumn had come with leaves on the ground and some pumpkins out front~the idea at the time was surreal~I was a single with no husband or children~this little home, a HOME was part of the dream life, for me...today I live in a yellow (ONE OF the many colors LOL) house that has lapboard siding and a porch...the family inside is the one of my longings~but hey, where are my pumpkins this year? I'm stopping at the pumpkin patch on Sat and picking up a few~for fun and for family~a reminder that DREAMS DO COME TRUE~sometimes!

I'm a city girl in a rural place living a farm girl's dream...if you'd like to join the other farmgirls at heart head overHERE!

NOPE, we didn't grow the pumpkins~wish we had, tho ;-))

Friday Farmgirls at Heart~Quilting: MY CHEATER Quilt (PrePrinted)

Plans4You

It's been about ten years ago since I first learned to "quilt" what I call a "cheater's" quilt. My quilt-expert buddy, Donna says it's a preprinted quilt, but because it's not a pieced one, I like my name for it better~it goes together so easy compared to one that's pieced! Isn't that cheating? LOL!!   NOT that I wouldn't like to learn HOW to piece one, because I definitely would! I just haven't done a pieced one, YET~one day, though, I am going to learn!!

Cheater Quilts are quite easy.  All you need is to gather together some measurements and simple supplies! You can make one up pretty quick!  Oh, these aren't my idea either. I can thank Miss Pat for teaching me those years ago and for the inspiration she gave me in showing me the ones she had done! Hers were so pretty, and I did one each for my kiddos when they were much younger for their twin beds. This time I am working on a baby gift for a friend.

The inspiration was the Disney movie, Cars. I went to Joann's Fabrics to get the materials.  It consisted of two layers of fabric and one of batting.  I used low loft and 100% cotton so it would wear and wash well.  The measurements are just right for a baby quilt.  Since the width is perfect, I didn't need to do anything but have it cut the appropriate length for both the solid and the print. (Make sure both sides are the same size!)

Supplies:

Two fabrics equal length of the project you are completing.  You can measure a blanket (quilt or comforter) that you already like and then take those measurements to the fabric store and purchase your fabric. Now what I did was take a color from a print and purchase that for the back. In this case it was the Disney Cars fabric with the bright primary red car of Lightening McQueen so I bought bright red to match.  When I made my daughter hers, I used black for the back and a butterfly print on black for the top.

Batting for the inside.  I've heard you can use old blankets for this, but I think if you can, getting the batting is nice.  You can choose how thick you want to quilt to be by choosing what "loft."  I chose low loft meaning it isn't awfully thick.  My thinking was that I'd have to quilt it by hand, and it would be easier with low loft instead of high.

Thread.  Match the dominate color.  I like to use the color of the solid background so that it's a monochromatic look.  But really, it's up to your tastes.  Use a good thread or embroidery floss.  You want this to be strong.

Quilting safety pins.  These are best to work with because they are bent to make pinning easier that with the unbent versions.  I've used both. Right now, this quilt is pinned with straight safety pins b/c I don't have the bent ones!

Directions:

Lay either the printed or solid facing down and then place the batting on top of the first layer.

Lay the top layer facing the ceiling and match those edges so they are even all the way around the quilt.

Smooth out any wrinkles from the center out.  Moving to the edges, smooth out all wrinkles.

After the piece is smooth, then go back to the center and pin dead center and work your way to the edges pinning as you go through all the layers.

Once you are reaching the edge, then roll the layers either towards the print or solid fabric. Roll this edge to put the raw sides turned under and pin all along the edges until the whole blanket is completed.

Once the edges are pinned, I always stitch these seams first.  This provides stability and strength to the early stages of the project.

Begin to stitch around a motiff in the patterned fabric.  My choice of bright red is matched with bright red thread.  I go through all the layers and then use the running stitch to outline a particular image all over the blanket. You could outlive all the images or just one particular one.  I like doing the least of them, and find that the guilt holds together quite well.  Another option is to "tie" the quilt using embroidery floss and using a larger bore needle go into areas spaced no further than eight inches and tie it off leaving about two inches after a square knot is tied.  You can also use buttons to tie the quilt off.  You could even quilt every motiff in the patterned fabric.  It's your choice!

After everything is stitched, you will see that your quilt is put together very well and solid.  It should last a good long time!

Do you quilt? Do you do pieced or "cheater" ones?

I'm still stitching but when I'm done I'll post up a pic for ya'll to see!

What are you working on?

Friday Farmgirls at Heart~Chocolate Spoons and Fun!

Plans4YouEverytinhg I do is tied around being a farmgirl and country LOL~even though I'm a city girl!  Soo this past week I found myself making a cool treat for our ladies' missionary meeting.  AND I don't really LIKE chocolate~believe it or not! I prefer fruit flavors~haha!

Please go check out what the other girls who have the farmgirl heart are up to this week!

Here's some pics and the process as I go...UNFORTUNATELY I don't have a pic of the finished spoons in their wraps~I cut off the corners of some sandwich baggies to cover and tied them with raffia~our ladies' meeting was African themed~so the raffia added to that!

Supplies: Add wax paper and loads of trays to what you see.

Don't drool over that bowl of choc, ya'll LOL!

This was a fun and easy project, just took some time! What you see as the last pic is some of the coconut spoons. Daughter and I did red sugar sprinkles, candy sprinkles in fall colors, crushed peanuts(unsalted) AND coconut that you see here.  These were used to stir into hot coco AND coffee~they went over big! Enjoy your farmgirl heart and bless you too!

Friday Farmgirls at Heart~Apple Plans!

Plans4You

Seems like all this Farm Girl EVER does is talk about her country-farm girl cooking! Well, it's this cooking that leads to the good eats at my table!

Last week, I shared about getting around my neighborhood on my bike, but this week it's just been too hot to ride and covet all the neighbor's fruit on their trees LOL~but God is good and has favored our love of fresh food with an offer from a friend of ours to come and pick their FIVE loaded apple trees~We're heading out this evening when it's a tad cooler to pick.  So now I'm hunting down the info on doing apples~we'd like to freeze applesauce!

How do you do apples? My mouth is watering just thinking about them!

Head on over to Plans4You to see what the other FarmGirls are up to!
