Review: Around the World With a Unit Study, The Old Schoolhouse Planner Module: Tavel the World

Travel the World
The Old Schoolhouse Planner Module: Travel the World
Digital download/58 pages
Ages:K-HS
Price: $7.95

Get it HERE: The Old Schoolhouse Store
My Take: Multi-age and good value!

The Crew's Take: HERE!

I received The Old Schoolhouse Planner module for June 2010, Travel the World  without monetary compensation in return for my opinions regarding this unit study.

Having teenagers is a challenge in more than one way, and finding curriculum that they don't see as childish is crucial!  Travel the World is a download module that comes with high school extensions and many of the resources you will need. The details of this world geography study are amazing!  I have learned so much, myself and I recommend that you will find good use and appreciation for Travel the World.

You will find:
study guide
quizzes
activity pages
coloring pages
copywork
lapbooking
high school extensions
links for a fun internet geography study
and more!!

The planner modules stand alone as unit study options for your child's learning experience.  You can add this study as part of a world history course for older kids like mine (9th & 10th grades) or introduce world geography to younger children with coloring and lapbooking options. This is a versatile product for multiple ages!

Are you concerned about using digital products with your children or in your homeschool? Are you concerned IF you are tech-savvy enough? Oh! I have to share!  After my download I was going through my product to realize that my computer which is literally dying did not download this entire eBook.  I was able to contact The Old Schoolhouse and redo the download which I am thankful!!  So don't worry! IF I can do it, like the old saying goes, YOU can do it!  TOS is great to work with. They have great support and store assistance! It's going to be FINE!

Think about it this way~consider the costs of ink, storage and using pre-printed materials.  I am using an 8GB jump drive to store my digital products this year.Jump drives are cost effective because if and when my hard drive crashes all will not be lost~ my little jump drive that fits on my key chain will have all my goodies stored safely for my use~I can take it to the library and print or use it straight on the screen, and I can also take anything I want printed to a print shop for some inexpensive copies!  I am a curriculum junkie, and the challenge of book shelf space looms large at my house, and digital is a great solution!

Don't let digital products slow you down~ you will want to print some of these beautifully made worksheets for your child. Just print what you are going to use! This is what I did!!  Of course if you want Travel the World in book form, you can do this as well using a three ring binder or have it bound for a book if you prefer! My friend takes her stuff to a print shop~you KNOW what I do! ;-))Versatility is HUGE with Travel the World~print what you use, and it's multi age and stage! If you have a large family it will work well in your home too! The colorful illustrations can be printed in gray scale for a cost/ink savings!  You decide for yourself WHAT works best with Travel the World~another key to its versatility!!
It's ALL good, but I am most excited about the high school extensions! A product that reaches all our children in their ages/stages is awesome!! It just makes sense in this economy to have a product that will expand this way!  I find that things I can go back to or use over time makes good CENT$ (pun intended!!) to me!! I am keeping it so being able to use it again later is smart!

You will need:
computer
print capabilities
internet
printer paper
coloring pencils, marker or crayons
pencils
scissors
glue stick
file folder (per child for lapbook)
optional Items: cardstock, globe, maps

Age/Grades:  If you have a young child who is not a strong reader, you will want to work with him to make sure he navigates the links and finds all the great online resources listed.  If your child is older, you may want to monitor so that he won't get into something that you prefer he not as the internet changes all the time!  The high school extensions can be modified for a younger child, and I find that the worksheets can be used for olders. I happen to like coloring, but my kids don't. If your older child needs penmanship practice they can do the copywork OR if not they can type the copywork for a keyboarding extension!  This really is a versatile product!

MY KIDS:  I used Travel the World with them in our world history studies using particularly the maps and geography definitions. We reviewed the continents and oceans.  They liked the online games, and I had them do the worksheets both youngers and h.s. extensions.

Remember GEOGRAPHY studies for your children this year:  Travel the World  is great!

DNG Sunny Seashells

The Old Schoolhouse Magazine
Download N Go:  Sunny Seashells

Ages: k-5th grades
$7.95 Get It HERE!

The waves rolling in, with the sun high in the sky, warm southerly breezes blowing this is where I grew up. On the southeast coast, the beach, marsh and water was something I took for granted, but having moved midwest, miss. When I was given Download N Go Sunny Seashells by Amanda Bennett, I became very interested because having grown up with seashells, it intrigued me to see what information would be offered for our littles about such a fun topic. Download N Go is a The Old Schoolhouse unit study that is easy to use with a quick download from your computer. It offers five days of study materials that will cover the subjects of handwriting, science, geography, spelling, and more! The graphics are colorful and attractive. Included are internet links for you and your child to do together~be sure and monitor this with your child for safety's sake.

DNG is useful as an extension of ocean studies~or as a stand alone unit study~you decide!  You could use this material to launch into greater in depth study. One thing I did think of is this will be enhanced if you own a seashell collection. I have collected seashells for years and how fun to categorize actual shells based on the instruction!! Is there an oceanography center/museum or institute nearby? Now is the time for a visit! Go to the beach and pick up seashells, find a way to extend the wonderful activities and information in Sunny Seashells! If you don't have the resources nearby, then the reading list will be of greater importance with the large pictures and information to share with your child.

Included are lapbooking and hands on activities. You can prepare these yourself for your younger children by pre-cutting them out and having them ready to go each day, or for a child who is learning to cut or an older child, let them do it so that their skills increase in this area. One thing I have thought of that would be neat with the DNG series is to have an uncolorized part or version for those children who like and need coloring experience. Fine motor skills are enhanced with these activities in the hands-on extensions.

Of course, you never have to do it all, but you will want to do as much as you can! Each day has objectives that are easy to accomplish. For example:

Day 1: Seashells—What Are They?

1. Let’s talk about seashells—what is your favorite seashell?
2. What are the main parts of a seashell?
3. Seashell of the Day: the giant clam
4. Seashells Around the World: Ireland

Remember that you can do all or just what you need to accomplish as DNG is completely customizable!

There's a library list of reading resources that many if not all are in the public library system. Don't feel obligated to purchase these books, but if you want to, then go ahead. If you have other books, you can use them as well. It's up to you! The list is categorized by each day too~no guess work! I like this!!

About lapbooking~if you've never constructed one of this, it requires a few simple supplies: paper brads, a file foler, printer paper, scissors, glue and construction paper (if you want) and pencil for your child. HOW easy is this, when most of us have everything except the brads!! They are sold at the office suppliers and file folders can be gotten there or at Wal-Mart. Included for your use are a few links to give you some instructions on just how easy lap booking is for your child along with a few examples of them. This will take any guess work out for you!

There are games, activities, word lists and more here! I like the short answer questions too. This is a skill that is so useful in teaching our children to write essay answers for language arts!!

When your child completes the study, there is a certificate of completion to present~WOW! It's all complete for easy use and value!

Download N Go is a great deal for your k-5th grade child for
$7.95 Sunny Seashells is awesome!

Download N Go Biography Amelia Earhart~Lapbooking!

Amanda Bennett and The Old Schoolhouse Magazine are partnering for a series of lapbook unit studies called Download N Go (Remember the Autumn Download N Go FREEbie?? (left sidebar!).)  Together this team will bring different themes~I am on the DNG Review Panel having received Amelia Earhart with no monetary compensation for my opinions.  I am a The Old Schoolhouse affiliate@http://www.sistertipster.blogspot.com.  I will be reviewing one Download N Go unit study each month so we can all become acquainted with these new studies.  Download N Go will answer questions for young children ages K-middle elementary school in a hands on fun way!  Ameilia Earhart is the first of the biographical unit lapbooking studies with more promised!

All about DownLoadNGo~check it out!

Just the name Amelia Earhart evokes a kind of mystery for me.  This once lady flyer lived in an era when it was quite daring for a woman to be so bold.  She led quite an interesting life with such a mysterious end that even today questions are unanswered.

But each day question are posted to your child so that learning will take place.  Questions about her life, about flight, her character and more!  The answers are available as your child navigates the information and creates the lapbook as a keepsake of the fun activities.

If you've never lapbooked then you may be wondering just how this method of learning works and what to do.  For parents there is a tutorial on how to do lapbooking with links to video instructions as well as a narrative by Stephanie Ruby.  I have to say that bit's a neat learning tool for young children.  I used this method with my church children to teach portions of the New Testament, and they loved it!  Be sure and allow your child to do all their own cutting and with your guidance putting the lapbook together.  (Remember your child's work is their own and you will be able to see their progress as they LEARN!  They are soooooooo proud work! Please allow your child this freedom to learn~it's so important to praise every step with gentle instruction!)  Stephanie has some good suggestions for making everything work beautifully! The tutorial videos are adorable~I loved watching the children in the video show just how lapbooking is done, and you might want to let your child see it too!  By using scissors and writing as well as gluing, your child will be building fine motor skills as well as educational knowledge about Ameila Earhart.  Lapbooking is GREAT for children!

Included are all the lapbooking components needed to complete the ONE WEEK~FIVE DAY STUDY that incorporates subjects:  historical biography, science, character and geography.  Activities: vocabulary words, research, question and answer, drawing and more~These are simple enough for the young child, but challenging enough for the experienced one as well!

Everything is here for a week of quality education and what's more, you will be able to spark a curiosity for flight and planes in your child!

I will suggest that extensions can be made for a field trip to the airport to see modern planes take off and land! If arranges you could get a tour of the plane and airport.

Each day there is a book list with SUGGESTED books that can be checked out from the public library.  Mrs. Bennettt is sure to let us know that these titles are just suggestions, but she does have links for you to purchase any of them.  Included are video online links to incorporate visual learning~have your speakers on so that all the sights and sounds can be enjoyed!  I was fascinated to watch these "peeks" into the past in the form of short 4-9 minute film that introduced me to the world of early flight: Amelia's world.  I can envision using this study to enhance a study of the early 20th century or a deeper science unit on flight, atmosphere or weather!

Much of the information is found on websites that is written for children, but some for older readers as well.  You will need to read to a young child and navigate the internet usage so that safety is assured.  The lapbook pages are beautiful and full color.  If you want black and white you could print in grayscale to preserve ink, but they are full color and nice!  This is not a coloring project or a book to read from but real lessons built into lapbooking studies for your child.

You will find what you need in this unit study to download it right away and teach without prep or worry!

The only thing you will need to have on hand are simple lapbooking supplies:
file folder
safety scissors
brass brads
glue stick
crayons/markers
pencil

I find Download N Go to be complete and interesting!

Amelia Earhart, the first Biography themed Dwonload N Go study by Amanda Bennettt and The Old Schoolhouse Magazine will be  useful in teaching young children to around fourth or fifth grades about an amazing lady with tenacity and knowledge on the early days of flight.  These are affordable at $7.95 each; you can't go wrong.  There is a chart of projected studies planned for the next several months
Here!

Christmas Is Soo Near!

2009 Holiday Digital Supplement/Idea Book
Another TOS FREEbie~Check out all the others on the FREEBIE FRIDAYS button!!
Christmas is just around the corner.  Right around the corner! I have been thinking about what I am going to do in order to be ready.  Do you decorate? Do you make any of your gifts? Do you buy much of them? What activities do you participate in?   Oh I know it's only November 2nd...I am still in the Autumn, Thanksgiving mode myself, but with a little planning the holidays can be less stressful and a time for the entire family~THIS IS YOU TOO, MOMS to have some quiet and peace!  I am beginning a series called Twas The Month Before Christmas! where I going to share all the tips and ideas I can for you to glean for your holiday season.  Let me say I want to hear all that you are planning or your favorite things or anything you like to do this time of year too! I love your input and comments! Thanks for being so responsive!

So today, over six weeks out . . . let's consider Gifts.

Gifts has to be one of the most stressful things about the season for those of us on a budget.  If money is tight, and who isn't going through that right now? You can reast assured that when you make that list you will want to check it twice.

Ideas:

1. Make a gift giving list.
Who can come off, who stays and who gets added.
2. Decide what you want to give each recipient.
Of course your young children and spouse are a high priority.  But what about your husband's coworkers, bosses or anyone he works with or yourself for that matter?  Is this a tradition that can't be broken or one where you can say, "this year, let's don't..."  I did this some time back, not because we cared less, but because we had less with some closest friends.  They had more than we, but even with the "Oh you don't have to get me anything..." statement made us feel so bad, that the gift recieved was worse than recieving nothing from that friend.  Do you understand what I am saying that it's more blessed to give and when you can't just getting can be painful.  Don't get me wrong, we have had and continue to have wonderful gifts, but for those close enough to know we are on the budget and well...it's such a sticky matter! You have to do what makes you comfortable, but remember that you can only DO WHAT YOU CAN AFFORD~ONLY! This goes for your personal and extended families also.
3. Now that your list is "checked twice" and you have decided on what gifts, consider finding them for as little as you can.  Shop ALOT and buy occasionally! Look for the lowest prices on items you are looking for in a price you can afford! Don't get lured in with the Christmas music and sights of the season with beautifully merchandised items CALLING YOUR MONEY! I hate going into the national discount retail stores . . . but I really hate it this time of year!  Why? Because they want my money! AND often they will get it unless I am VERY careful! So stick to your list and if isn't on your list, and you think it's the perfect gift for Great Aunt Matilda, then WRITE IT DOWN, the price and place and KEEP LOOKING! Retailers are countning on impulsive buying to put them in the black this Christmas season, and they are working hard to get our money!  Do you want a trampeline for the kids this year? What do they cost now? When is it on a good sale~by knowing the cost before the season you will KNOW when the sale will occur!

4. Make your items.  A word of caution goes here! I have cruised the net, and true there all ALL KINDS of pretty handmade ideas out there~I am not a Scrooge about this, but I do want to say that if you are planning to make any gifts, consider your time and money as part of the gift for what you will give.  An example of this is recently I made a handmade throw for a newlywed couple we love~I owned the yarn and it was my time I offered really.  Now I am paying shipping to send it because we live away, but I wanting to send something nice for my money.  While I wait to hear if they like it and HONESTLY may never know if they don't~remember gifts that are handmade are a toss up! Sometimes they bomb! Have you ever gotten one that. . .uh..well...uh...well...??? I know I want my gifts to be loved and well recieved by the person I am giving to, and while most are gracious, and we all KNOW it's the thought that counts, handmade UNLESS you KNOW the person can be a toss up! Just be careful.  NOT saying DON'T~just be cautious! Sometimes a card is enough~or some candy if it's not ill health affecting! I've done that~bought candy and a pretty container when I didn't know what else to do!

Gifts are one of the big things about the holidays that can cause stress for the homeschooling family! Let's consider everyone in the family including both parents who may feel extra burdened this time of year~for some enjoyment and relaxation!

We are schooling right up to the few days before as we want to finish when the weather breaks in Spring!  Of course this is your decision how you want to proceed.  For now, I wish you a wonderful Autumn day looking forward to twinking lights and sweet smells and sounds!

Everyone is Special!

I was offered Someplace Called Special produced by The Old Schoolhouse Magazine for review.

This is a heartwarming source of encouragement for parents of children who experience challenges, often living within the label of "special needs."  This is a compilation of the stories of ten Moms who share from their perspective what it's like and how they are blessed by their child.  In eBook, easy to navigate form, you will find honesty and hope concerning children with differences, "special needs."

Included are:
Aspburger's Syndrome
ADHD
Deafness
Dyslexia
Cerebral Palsy
Sensory Processing Disorder
Lupus
Giftedness
Down's Syndrome

(Please note that there are other differences discussed as generally there are accompanying issues within these diagnosis presentations.)

Within the eBook, there are links to each diagnosis giving readers clear meanings of them along with many interventions that are discussed.  The Moms discuss opening what they have tried, what works and what has not with their children.

Along with the stories, there is a section of 10 reasons for to homeschool a special learner with explanations! IEP (Individualized Educational Plans) are discussed as well as public schol and private interventions.  Specific insights are shared in a question and answer formate that will inform of the benefits of homeschooling special needs kids.

I find Someplace Called Special a must read for any parent, Mom or Dad navigating the waters of differences in their special needs child.  As a Mom of special learners, I can identify with some of these Mom's experiences, struggles and perspectives.  "Been there and done that" in some of the areas discussed!  After years of educating and being in the trenches myself,

I found NEW information that I had not previously attained!  Check out this resource!

If you are not the parent of a special learner, but want to know more, you can also benefit by a greater understanding of the issues involved and what the real needs of children can be beyond a label.  As I was reading, I remembered a situation where our special learner was "friends" with a child who showed insensitivity to the special needs issue, and think that if everyone could read a book or find some way to understand, much could be gained for everyone involved!

Someplace Called Special is such a book  for understanding!  Normal is just a town in IL, not anywhere I've personally been or most anyone I know as been...We are all "different," and as has been pointed out by contributing author, Heather Allen, everyone has special needs!

Click on the sidebar to get Someplace Called Special offered by The Old Schoolhouse Magazine.

Yours for ALL of us with differences, "special needs,"

Did I Tell You?

My daughter is learning Japanese! I am so amazed. She is singing, speaking, reading and practicing writing! I am so incredibly proud~this is all due to our opportunity to review a wonderful language learning system called Tell Me More. I was given the opportunity through the Old Schoolhouse Magazine's marketing program TOS Crew to review many great homeschooling products which Tell Me More is apart of that opportunity! You can read my review here: http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/SisterTipster/666727/

Girl Thing One really loves her language learning CD~and to the credit of her and the system, she has completed the first year! She's excited to have one solid year behind her~and I just had to share something that sort of fits into this whole thing Japanese~WE ACCIDENTLY grew Japanese pumpkins! They are called kabocha! The package my husband planted said acorn squash ;-)) but when we got GREEN pumpkins I told him that I'd never seen an acorn squash LOOK like that! Well, I began to research as they are prolific and have yielded us a nice harvest~so whadda I do wiff 'em?? Check out this link http://japanesefood.about.com/od/vegetable/p/japanesekabocha.htm on kabocha~there's even a recipe...we like winter squash and fresh pumpkin...pie anyone???
